Jolie's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died at age 56 of ovarian cancer in January 2007. Jolie realized that she was likely suffering from cervical cancer by 50 percent.
The doctors test results showed that 87 percent she risks suffering from breast cancer. Jolie is a carrier of the cancer gene BRCA1. So after undergoing a double mastectomy procedure, risk of breast cancer decreased by 5 percent.
"Doctor estimate that I have 87 percent risk for breast cancer and 50 percent of ovarian cancer," wrote Angelina Jolie in a New York Times editorial and quoted by Dailymail.
Only a small fraction of breast cancer is an inherited gene mutation. Women with defects BRCA1 have a 65% risk of developing this cancer.
"I wanted to write this to tell other women that mastectomy is not an easy decision," she wrote. "But I'm glad I did,"
"For every woman who reads this, I hope I can help you to make a choice. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek information from medical experts who can help you through it "
Preventive mastectomy is the surgery to remove one or both breasts. Its function is to prevent or reduce the risk of breast cancer.
